Statement of intent
I have decided to focus my project on the theme of scale and how it can be manipulated to change the way an image is seen and understood. I am interested in how something familiar can be made to look unusual or unrealistic simply by changing its size or position. By doing this, I want to explore how photography can move away from just capturing reality and instead create something more distorted and thought provoking.
In everyday life, we see things in a way that feels natural and expected, but by changing scale this can quickly become confusing or surreal. A small object can appear large and dominant, while something important can be reduced or pushed into the background. This shift makes the viewer question what they are looking at and challenges their sense of reality. I am interested in how these small changes can have a big impact on how an image is interpreted.
Throughout this project, I will experiment with both in camera techniques and Photoshop editing to create these effects. Using forced perspective and positioning, I can physically change how objects relate to each other in the frame. I will also use editing to adjust size, layer images and repeat elements, making the final outcomes look almost unrealistic. I want my images to appear edited and constructed, even if some are created purely in camera, so that the viewer is unsure of what is real and what has been changed.
I have been inspired by Andreas Gursky and Michael Wolf, who both explore scale in different ways. Gursky often creates large scale images where repetition and structure make environments feel overwhelming and almost unnatural. Wolf focuses on crowded spaces and repeating patterns, especially in architecture, which changes how we see everyday buildings. Both artists show how scale and repetition can transform something ordinary into something more abstract and visually striking.
Through this project, I aim to create a series of images that challenge how scale is normally understood. I want my work to feel slightly unrealistic and controlled, making the viewer question what they are seeing. By experimenting with both shooting techniques and editing, I hope to develop a more creative and intentional approach to photography, pushing my images beyond simple representations of reality.
